The following is a news release from today’ edition of the Benzie County Record Patriot, April 16, 2008.

Smendzuik joins select company; sets 2 Benzie Central school soccer records

BENZONIA – Benzie Central senior Steven Smendzuik was among a select few soccer goalkeepers statewide who recorded over 20 career shutouts.
Smendzuik, a four year varsity team member, logged Husky school records of 22 shutouts over his career and the most shutouts for a single season, eight. The senior goalie notched six shutouts this past season, according to coach Don Cunningham.
Smendzuik appears to be the only player from northern Michigan to perform this feat. During his freshman year, Smendzuik played on the Benzie soccer team with his brother Mike. During his first year, Smendzuik recorded his eight shutouts.
Smendzuik earned All District awards in 2004, 2005, and 2007. This past season he was voted the team leadership award and in 2004 and 2007, Smendzuik received the All Region honorable mention by the Record Eagle.
Benzie Central claimed the runners up shot in the Division 3 District 47 Michigan High School playoffs this past season. It was the first time the Huskies reached the district championship. The Huskies fell to Manistee in the finals and finished the season with a 14-8-1 record.
Smendzuik was also a member of the TBAYS based North Storm team coached by Jim Furstenberg for 2 years.
After graduation, Smendzuik is planning to attend Central Michigan University where he wants to study business and computer science and possibly play some Club soccer.
